Clairvoyance is one of the psychic senses, known as “clear vision,” “clear seeing” or psychic sight. Because of its name, it can be confusing. What is it exactly? What does clairvoyance look and feel like when you experience it?

According to Doreen Virtue, clairvoyance is seeing the truth about the past, present and future. This “seeing” isn’t necessarily seeing a clear image in front of you with your physical eyes. It’s more like a memory of sight, as if you are recalling a person or thing or a picture of it.

Examples that Doreen Virtue uses are a vivid dream that comes true, seeing something you’ve lost (like your keys or your wallet) in your mind’s eye as a picture of where you left them. Or seeing a person in your mind’s eye and later receiving a call, email or letter from them. The connecting piece between these examples is the use of your psychic sight — there’s always an element of seeing, whether in the form of a picture or a movie, like in a dream.

You can also see an impression of energy with clairvoyance, a sense that there’s something extrasensory going on in one part of the room.

Developing clairvoyance

You can develop your clairvoyant abilities by opening and strengthening your third eye. Your third eye is a chakra, an energy center, located just above and between your physical eyes. This is where you see clairvoyant images and information.

Clairvoyant images can be seen with your eyes open or closed and by using your physical eyes in addition to your third eye. Information can appear as still images, cartoons, paintings or movies.

There are several ways to develop your clairvoyance. All of them require trust — in yourself and in the universe. Use these meditations, exercises and visualizations to release your fear of your clairvoyant abilities, open your third eye, strengthen it and focus your intuitive vision.

Releasing fear

Often (although not always), people who want to develop their intuitive senses recall being aware of spirit as a child. Clairvoyance is often one of their abilities. But, due to being wide open and not knowing how to set boundaries and intention, we sometimes saw things that were scary. Or the adults we told about what we saw told us it was impossible, wrong or evil. And we shut down our intuitive sight.

You can open it back up now, safely, staying in control and with good, firm boundaries.

You can do this several ways:

  • Ask for your highest good (and only that) in an opening prayer as you begin your work or practice.
  • Meditate with a mantra, such as “I am willing to release all fear of seeing my future,” or “I release my past fear and know I see only good.”
  • Give yourself time. Be gentle with yourself.

Here are some exercises and meditations to help open up your intuitive seeing or clairvoyant abilities.

Sixth chakra opening meditation

This meditation opens your sixth chakra at your third eye, helping you begin to unfold your clairvoyant or intuitive seeing abilities. This can be done as a brief 5-10 minute meditation.

Sit quietly. Breathe slowly and fully.

Visualize white light entering the crown of your head.

Allow it to fill your entire head with beautiful, crystalline white light.

Now imagine your third eye chakra as a deep purple color. See this deep purple gem in the center of your forehead absorbing the white light. As it does it becomes energized and full of light, as if it’s being lit up from within.

As your third-eye chakra becomes more and more vibrant, allow the light to expand and fill the whole room around you. See the room filled with bright purple light.

Continue to visualize your sixth chakra energized and full of light for as long as it comfortable. Then return your awareness to the room around you, wiggle your fingers and toes and, when you’re ready, open your eyes.

Third-eye opening meditation

Go into meditation, breathing slowly and deeply.

Focus on your third eye, just above and between your physical eyes.

Look upward about 20 to 25 degrees.

As you breathe slowly and fully, look for and notice an oval shape resting where you’re focusing your eyes. This is your third eye.

Do you see it with an open or closed eyelid? Or do you see it like a camera lens or telescoping aperture?

If the eyelid or lens is closed or partially closed, ask it to open.

Reaffirm your willingness and desire to open your intuitive sight, knowing you are safe and will only see your highest good.

Third-eye strengthening visualizations

As you sit in meditation, focus your attention on your third eye. Count slowly, starting from the number 1, and visualize the number in your mind’s eye. See it clearly. What color is it? How large is it? Is it 2D or 3D?

Continue on to 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. for several minutes.

Continue this exercise are using the alphabet (Are the letters uppercase or lowercase? What kind of font are they in? And then colors. Finally move on to visualizing different items (such as common symbols).

While you’re at it, you can ask your guides and inner self what meaning each of these numbers, letters, colors and images has for you and develop your symbolic dictionary.

Clairvoyance focusing exercise

You can further strengthen and focus your clairvoyant abilities and get clearer, more useful images and information simply by asking.

Go into a meditation with the intention of receiving messages from Spirit. As you begin to receive impressions and information, focus your attention on what you are receiving clairvoyantly. What do you see in your mind’s eye?

Now, ask Spirit or your Spirit guides to make those pictures become clearer. You could mentally say “Images, I ask you to grow in size and strength, now.” Due to your intention, the images will become clearer and brighter.

Next, ask for clarification about what you’re seeing.

Mentally ask, “What does this image mean?” You will get an answer. It might come as a thought, a feeling, one or more words. You can also ask Spirit yes and no questions to verify the answer and may either hear yes or no responses or simply feel a tug or flow or energy or a feeling of resistance.

If the answer is still unclear, ask to receive it again or in a different way. Folks in Spirit and your guides want to communicate with you and will keep working with you until the communication and message is clear.
